Choosing Queens University Belfast (QUB) as one of the initial partners of the Brian Conlon Foundation was always going to be an obvious choice.
Queen’s University, Belfast, has made a global impact through excellence in research and innovation, helping to shape a better world, as well as a reputation for producing some of Ireland’s most elite sports people and leaders in business.
Recognised as one of the UK’s leading research intensive universities and a renowned reputation for excellence, Times Higher Education Impact Rankings placed Queen’s University at 43rd in the world’s Top 50.
The School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences is a world-class teaching resource and internationally recognised research infrastructure.
The Brian Conlon Foundation in conjunction with the Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research at Queens is honoured to partner and facilitate the creation of a new Cancer Research Project. This research project will have a focus on the medical research of Oesophageal cancer, specifically early diagnosis.
Queen’s University is known internationally not only for its academic achievements but also its sporting prowess.
Queen’s Sport provides students with state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor facilities ideal for competitive or high-performance athletes, working with student clubs, governing bodies and alumni networks to develop sporting academies.
The Brian Conlon Foundation is delighted to announce ‘The Brian Conlon GAA Academy Scholarship’ in partnership with Queen’s University Belfast GAA Academy.
Inaugural awards and scholarships will be announced on 25th April, 2022.

The Community Foundation (NI) is a local, independent charitable foundation established to help communities. They provide a managed service for charitable funds on behalf of individuals, families, charitable trusts, foundations and businesses. As part of their service they also provide philanthropic advice and guidance.
In the 40 years since its foundation the Community Foundation (NI) have awarded £110m in circa 1,000 grants.
The Brian Conlon Foundation will work alongside the Community Foundation (NI) to manage our donations for community projects and organisations in the city of Newry. As part of their service they will ensure that the process and decision making around donations and grant giving are managed with the utmost care, consideration and professionalism.

Foundation Initiatives

Cancer Research
in partnership with Queen’s University School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences
In partnership with Queen University School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences the Foundation will sponsor a clinical doctor, BioBank nurse and PhD student for five years to focus on the medical research of Oesophageal cancer, specifically early diagnosis.
The School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences is a world-class teaching resource and internationally recognised research infrastructure.
The Brian Conlon Foundation medical fund programme will act as part of Queen University’s wider Cancer Research programme.

Advancement of Education
The Brian Conlon Foundation will create and facilitate Scholarships for local students to assist in completing third-level education.
Awards granted to students from the local Newry area are to assist with academic fees for the duration of their third-level education.
The Brian Conlon Foundation collaborate with Community Foundation for Northern Ireland in this initiative and aim to work alongside local schools and universities with the initial Scholarship programmes announced September 2022.
The Community Foundation for Northern Ireland is a local, independent charitable foundation established to help communities in need, drive social change and change lives through impactful grant-making and delivering innovative programmes.
Advancement in Amateur Sports
Queen’s University Belfast is known for producing some of Ireland’s most elite sports people and leaders in business.
The Brian Conlon GAA Scholarship promises to recognise and reward young footballers who display exceptional academic and sporting potential.
Scholarships will be promoted throughout schools in Ulster to encourage young students to follow in Brian’s footsteps and aspire to excellence, both on and off the pitch, at Queen’s University, Belfast.
The inaugural award will be announced by the university in April, 2022.
